In 1985, Charleston Okafor came to America from Ogidi, a small village in eastern Nigeria, with the intention of becoming a doctor. Then he discovered MTV. Eleven years after his move, Okafor set aside his medical books to become the force behind the Cleveland-based Asante Groove project, whose sound runs the gamut from dancehall reggae to jazz. In 2013, he recorded his debut solo album, America, produced by Eccodek and featuring Antibalas and Iron & Wine’s Stuart Bogie on tenor sax. He now fronts Hybrid Shakedown, another globally-inspired Cleveland band.
