about

Mohan Veena and Vocals: Prakesh Sonntakke :: Dholak: E Shankar Tabla Programming, Beats, Electronics: Adham Shaikh
Original version appears on Universal Frequencies

When I made the original veena performance from the smaller segments that Prakesh recorded for me in 2007, I chose to feature and let breathe the flow of veena and voice. This forced me to leave out some really tasty veena parts. I wanted to make this version of the raga veena-centric, so to speak, and showcase the entire veena performance. I added voice only as a spice rather than the main dish, and opened up the groove with slow, trap-style 808 beats and rolling hi-hats. This raga also features a dholak performance from E Shankar that I discovered in my hard drive. He’s a Montreal-based tabla player who worked on my EkkO and Dreamtree Projects, and his dholak is, in my opinion, the glue that brought the tune together. This version features the full nine-minute raga, not the edited version featured on Universal Frequencies.
